cannot connect to 2000 from Vista

I recently created a home network between a Vista laptop and a 2000
desktop. I have the same user account on both machines with admin
rights. The router is a linsys wrt56g. My internet connection is a
sprint wireless moble broadband unit that connects to two usb ports on
the desktop.
I had intial trouble setting up the network. I had to disable auto
DHCP on the router and assign static IP address on both machines.
Change the router from "gateway" to"router" and share the internet
connection.
In the network center on vista, I saw both the router and the desktop.
Since I was logon to both machines with the same user account, as soon
as I clicked on the desk top, I connected to the desktop and was able
to use the internet share. I also able to share the printer on the
desktop and had printing ablilities from the laptop.
This worked fine for a couple weeks and then something happened to the
network. I lost the ablility to connect to the desktop and therefore
the internet and printer shares. The desktop still comes up in the
networking center and on explorer trees but when I click on the
desktop, I am prompted for a user name and password even though I am
logged on using the same acount on each machine. I enter the account
name and password. I then receive an "improper name or password" error
message. Now the name of the laptop appears before the logon name
(laptop\name). I retry using the name of the desktop (desktop\name)
and receive the same error message.
The funny thing is that I can connect to the vista laptop from the 2000
desktop. I can ping all the IP addresses. Any suggestions?
