Cannot flash BIOS on Vista 32

Posted: 11-11-2007, 10:45 PM
I have n Inspiron E1705 with Vista Premium Home edition (32) I have BIOS
version 6. I cannot flash it nor can I update it to the current 9. DELL
says i have to reset my computer to factory settings and basically start
again. As my Maxtor one touch series II 100GB external hard drive is only
recognized as 10GB, I cannot backup all of my data. Can anyone help.

Why do you need the new bios version? What is it you are trying to fix?

I have a Maxtor one touch seriesII that has 100GB of memory. My computer
sees it as only 10GB of memory and keeps telling me that it is critically low
on memory when it clearly is not. i also cannot back up any more data on the
Maxtor because of this. Maxtor ( or now Seagate) says that it is a BIOS
issue on my computer. Since I cannot flash the BIOS that i have i presumed
them to be right. i spent 2 hours with DELL chat with no success. A few
months ago they said it was a motherboard issue and had a new one put in and
said that everything is fine now. i did not have any reason to try to flash
the BIOS until now. THey said that i have to set the computer to factory
settings and start again. i cannot do that because my Maxtor does not allow
anything else to be loaded on it, and i know that i will not be able to
locate all of the software disks that i have added since i bought the
computer 2/07

It seems that you are in a catch 22.

You can not obtain the capacity to backup your data without the flash update
and you don't want to flash without backing up your data.

Maybe it's time to take the computer to a professional who has the tools
needed to accomplish what needs to be done.

Hello,

My name is Mike, I’m a Technical Analyst at Dell corporate headquarters
in Round Rock, TX. I’m part of an internet outreach team developed to
interact with the online community regarding technical questions and
issues that customers face with Dell products. I read your question and
wanted to offer some help.

First, I’m a little confused about the actual problem when attempting
to flash the BIOS. Are you receiving an error? And if so, what error
are you getting? If the hard drive can boot and run the OS without any
problems then there should be no need to reinstall your OS to get the
BIOS to flash. 'This'
is the flash you should be using, just to be certain we’re on the same
page. You download it to your desktop, close all other applications,
then double click on the executable and the system should do the rest.

If you follow the instructions above and still get the same results
please post the actual error message you receive.

Thank you,

Mike
Dell customer advocate

Re: Cannot flash BIOS on Vista 32

I am able to view the screen, use audio, etc... DELL sends out upgrade
alerts and one of them was to upgrade the system BIOS to version 8...this was
called critical/urgent. i had no success in upgrading the BIOS to 8 and have
called 3 separate times to DELL. The first said it was a motherboard problem
and had it replaced. the second said that he recommended that i revert my
computer to factory state, meaning delete all of the programs and data that i
have. i have a backup harddrive but do not have all of the program disks and
do not desire to do this. The third said don't worry about it. Yes, i did
download the BIOS upgrade (now version9) to my desktop, closed all
applications and tried to follow the directions. I receive the same error:
Application Error Return 0x00000610 and Windows Error Return 0x00000002.
i even tried putting the program onto a DVD disk and boot the computer with
it in the DVD player. No luck. Any ideas?

If the motherboard has been replaced and the errors are pointing toward
application and Windows problems, I would say that maybe the softwar
suggestion is on the right track, just the wrong approach. Instead o
wiping the drive clean I would suggest seeing if you could put
different HDD in the system just to flash the BIOS. Also, make sure yo
don’t have your external Maxtor hooked up to the system when you try an
flash it.

Actually, the reason you want to flash the BIOS is because your Maxto
is only showing up as 10G, but you don’t mention trying it on anothe
PC. Will another PC recognize the full amount of storage? It would be
shame if the BIOS flash didn’t fix the problem in which case we’d b
right back to square one. The missing storage space plus th
application/Windows errors may be pointing to a more severe problem.

The Maxtor is seen in its full capacity on my husband's computer. I am able
to sync my Treo without problem, and sync my iPod without problem. DO they
flash the BIOS? I really want to upgrade to A09 and cannot figure out why
the upgrade does not work as listed. I even went to your link and tried
again.
