You mention that you have checked all the usb in device manager, do you mean
the ieee1394 bus host controllers? As it would be this that would create a
problem not the usb ports.
Do you have the cam connected via firewire?
Is it turned on and in the vcr/playback position?
When connected do you get the xp ping and new hardware connected balloon?
Is it possible for you to check your cam and cable on another pc which you
know to work with another camera? And repeat with another camera and cable
on your pc?

MovieMaker tells you that there is no capture device connected then?
Try something like Windv, download from here for free and see if that helps.

Ignore the fact that the cam works with it's own software with the sd card
as this will use usb and should have no bearing on the firewire connection.
