cannot install download for driver update, or other microsoft updates

Hi,
I'm not particularly computer savvy. The problem began
by trying to download "Turbo Lister" from eBay. I'm
unable to this, I receive a message that the connection
has been interrupted, something like that. I went to the
Microsoft page to download an update that might help
solve this problem, but I was unable to download that
one. I tried to update my driver, still, I am
disconnected or I get a message saying that my Internet
Settings have been changed, somewhere during the
installation. So, I can't download anything,
apparantly. I need help, badly. I recently (thanks to
the Blaster, etc worms) updated and installed all the
critical downloads from Microsoft. I've tried disabling
firewall, disabling anti-virus "stuff," and nothing seems
to be working. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated, but keep in mind, my terminology
of "computers" is limited. Thank you,
