Cannot install printer drivers because cannot start spooling servi

Posted: 04-17-2007, 05:08 AM
I am trying to install a Canon Prixma MP600 printer with the CD and I am
unable to
start the print spooler so the installation stops. When I issued the command
at the command prompt: "net start spooler," I got the error message "The
system cannot find the file specified."

Am I missing the spoolsv.exe file? Where can I get this file and why am I
missing it? Is the file located in an incorrect area and the system cannot
find it?

Any help would be great!

Are you able to find the "Print Spooler" service in the services console?

In general, the message "The system cannot find the file specified" does not
necessarily refer to a file and the file name is not usually given. So in
other words, some unnamed object that is probably but not necessarily a file
is missing. It would be a leap to say that this means Spoolsv.exe is missing
and that you should reinstall Windows.

What exactly is the error message you got when you typed "net start spooler"
at the command prompt?

When I deliberately deleted spoosv.exe, I got:

"System error 2 has occured.

The system cannot find the file specified."

Actually, within a couple of minutes, something restored spoolsv.exe
(Windows File Protection?).

Does C:\Windows\system32\spoolsv.exe exist?
Does HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler exist?
Is ImagePath set to %SystemRoot%\system32\spoolsv.exe?
Is ObjectName set to LocalSystem?
Does SYTEM have Full Control to spoolsv.exe according to the Security page
of the file properties in Explorer?

File Monitor from Sysinternals.com (this will redirect to a Microsoft site)
will tell you if it is a file that it is looking for that is not present.
