Cannot log in to Administrator account

Posted: 09-17-2003, 04:08 AM
When I got my computer it had XP installed and the only
accounts were "Administrator" and "Guest". So I worked
for a few weeks, and then one day I decided to create a
user account.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT????

The "Administrator" account quietly dissapeared. Taking
with it all access to the administrator folder, and
adminisrative access to the drive itself. This includes
access denied to user accounts with administrative
privelage. so...

HOW DO I LOG ON AS ADMINISTRATOR???

The account is visible in MMC.
The account only appears in login in 'SAFE MODE'
The drive is on a RAID controller, so I can't load the
drive in SAFE mode.
As an 'Administrative user' I can take ownership of the
FOLDER (maybe) but not the DRIVE.

Contrary to popular belief, being a user with
administrative privaleges IS NOT THE SAME AS
ADMINISTRATOR.

WTF am I supposed to do?????

ALL I WANT TO DO IS LOG IN AS 'ADMINISTRATOR' AND ACCESS
THE DRIVE. THE WHOLE ENTIRE DRIVE. I WANT TO SEE
EVERYTHING -E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G- ON MY OWN FRIGGING HARD
DRIVE. WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO BE SUCH A PROBLEM????

Someone please oh please oh please beat up an XP engineer
for me. oh please oh please. They need it so bad.

The Administrator account is hidden by design once a new account is
created.
There are at least two ways to solve the problem:
1. Use Tweak UI to expose Administrator:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp

2. A better way is to create another Administrator account and copy
the data from the original account to the new Administrator:
But first, reboot, tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Select Administrator.
Then:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151
This will give you a new profile nearly identical to the original.

It is not a good idea to routinely use the Administrator, save it for
an emergency.
It is also not a good idea to use a profile with Administrator access
for routine work.
Routine work should be done with a Limited User.
Use Administrators only for work that needs an Administrator.
