cannot ping xp computer from vista

I'm at a loss here. I'm trying to network my old xp laptop using
d-link pcmcia wireless card to my vista laptop which uses an interna
intel wireless chip.
I can ping the vista machine from the xp machine, but not vice versa.
I'm fairly certain that the problem lies somewhere in my configuratio
of the wireless card on the xp laptop.
for some reason, my router will not assign an ip address through dhcp
so I had to set a static IP address to get the machine on the internet.
The default gateway and DNS server are both set to the router I
address, 192.168.0.1, and the xp machine has a static ip address o
192.168.0.115.
when I try to ping the xp machine from vista, I get the respons
"Destination host unreachable."
The really odd thing is that the network folder on vista will see th
xp machine on the network, but when I try to connect it tells me it'
not a valid hostname when I run the diagnostic.
I added an entry to the /windows/system32/etc/hosts file that resolve
the xp hostname(hp) to the ip address 192.168.0.115.
When I directly connect the two machines together with a patch cable,
am able to access the xp machine from vista and transfer files, but
cannot get the same success through the router.
I am at my wits end, and would really appreciate any help y'all ca
offer me
