Cannot remote desktop, do both machines need to be on same domain?

I'm attempting to RD to my Vista machine from XP machine, but the XP
one is not on same domain. Therefore, I'm unable to "add user" from
the Vista RD settings. There are both on the same network and can ping
each other.

Do both machines need to be on same domain? If so, then I'd rather
revert to VNC or something similar where if I can ping the damned IP,
I can login with user/pwd.

frustrated in Denver.

Cannot remote desktop, do both machines need to be on same domain?

they don't' need to be in the same domain, but you do need to enable remote
desktop on the Vista machine. This will open the proper firewall ports
(3389) needed to RDP. Right click on my computer select remote settings and
enable remote desktop. Then ensure you are getting to the right box by
testing access via the ip address first.

hope this helps

Thanks Josh. ALready enabled and added exceptions to Vista Firewall
but I think I've just determine that my customer's firewall is
blocking ports that RD needs. Will work with them.

I'm surprised that as you are doing this commercially you don't use
something like Teamviewer...

How is Teamviewer any different from VNC?

Well not knowing a lot about VNC, with Teamviewer, nothing needs to be
installed on the client machine...you just run an executable from the
desktop...
