Cannot Remote Desktop to Vista

Posted: 11-27-2006, 08:53 PM
I've got the RTM version of Vista installed. I've configured everything that
I can think of to enable Remote Desktop:

- checked "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
- checked the Remote Desktop and Remote Adminstration options in the
firewall/port settings spot
- ensured that "old" Remote Desktop versions are allowed to connect

(my descriptions of the settings may be off, as I'm not on Vista right now)

My router has port 3389 directed to Vista's IP. I've even changed that
registry to try a different port, but no luck. I have no problems connecting
to the XP install on a different drive for that same PC (but with a different
IP) over the Internet. I *can* Remote Desktop to Vista within my domain, but
*not* over the Internet. I can also Remote Desktop to other PCs with
different OS' on my domain over the Internet without problems.

It sounds like a router problem doesn't it? But aside from making sure the
port number is mapped to the correct IP, I'm not sure what else I might be
missing from a Vista configuration perspective. Any ideas?

Solved - there was an extra setting in Windows Live OneCare that I missed
which controls whether a Remote Desktop connection is available to computers
on the same network, or via the Internet as well.

I struggled with that one as well.

I've got a somewhat similar problem, but I'm not able to RDP to any machines
over the internet from my Vista machine. I'm running Vista Ultimate RTM,
trying to RDP to W2K3 server over the internet. 3389 is forwarded on my
router, I can RDP to this machine from XP machines over the internet. Any
ideas?
