Cannot set default midi device

I cannot set the default midi device in Sound and Audio
Devices dialog in Control Panel (on winXP Pro).

There is an available device in the list of devices but
everytime I select one and click apply, the default device
is always set back to empty.

This was working before.
I can play wav or mp3 alright.

Please help. I've been tinkering with this for weeks now.
Searched the net but to no avail.
