Cannot stop file sharing on a directory

Posted: 09-11-2008, 03:30 PM
My documents folder appears to have become shared with another user on my
computer. I want to turn this off. Alternatively I would like to turn it off
for a sub folder of my documents. I am using Vista Home Premium.

When I select Share on the directory, and then try to stop file sharing or
remove the other user from being allowed to share, the system thinks about it
for a while and then comes back with "You could not stop sharing the selected
folder" "click here for more info ...". It then says "Some items are still
shared" and "this folder is a shared folder"

Hi,

Try this:
Right click folder(s) > Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing tab >
uncheck Share > apply or OK. The sharing icon on the selected folder should
disappear within a few seconds.

You may have to perform this starting with the subfolder and working your
way up to the parent folder, depending on how the subfolders and parent
folders were set up for sharing.

Hope this helps…

No, this is exactly the problem: this doesn't work. You can't disable file
sharing like this. Microsoft has made this part of Vista extremely
misleading -- you follow the instructions to stop file sharing, you wait a
long time for Vista to think, and then it gives you a useless error message.
Shame!

I have spent hours on this and I think I found the solution. It has nothing
to do with sharing in Vista and so you cannot stop sharing on a directory by
trying to change sharing properties or by using the Network and Sharing
Center. It has to do with Security. So instead of right clicking and
selecting the Sharing tab, select the Security tab instead. You should then
be able to change the permissions and fix your problem. It worked for me.
Thanks Microsoft!

This won't work. Unfortunately, Microsoft chose to program Vista in a very
misleading way. I had this problem and it took me hours to discover the
solution, and I suspect your problem is the same as mine. You will find the
solution by clicking on the Security tab, not the Sharing tab. Try it. And
thank you Microsoft for wasting hours our lives because we thought we could
control file sharing eiither through clicking on the sharing tab or through
the Network and Sharing Center feature and then giving us totally useless
error messages and no support. Shame!
