| Well I don't know what put it right but the problem is resolved. The only thing I am aware of that changed is that i have updated the Nvidia Gforce4 platform drivers. Having said that the main nvstor.sys has not changed (510.2600.931). Hope this helps somebody "knight-gkla" wrote: Quote:

| Hi knight-gkla. I am having same prob on Vista Home Premium, AM Athlon, MVIDIA GeForce 6100 Video Trying to use "Backup Up Files" on brand new Windows Vista Hom Premium. During "Creating a shadow copy" getting the message "Th backup did not complete successfully. An error occurred. The followin info... Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF). This is a brand-new system We have loaded no s/w apps except for Office std 2007 and a couple M of data in My Documents. Absolutely nothing else. I will try your hin abt upgrading the NVIDIA driver & get back to you Can't imagine what the programmers were smoking when they used the ter "Catastrophic Failure" w/o further explanation. Scared the pants of grandpa, I think he thought the machine was actually going to blow up o him -- skater61 | Guest

| According to Microsoft, this issue may be related to E-machines (other OEMs too?) messing w/ Vista. Called E-machines they piped me over to Microsoft. MS gave me the run around back to E-machines. Guy #2 at E-machines says they don't support this. MS wants $59 to give me the time of day. What a hopeless mess. Take the computer back or invalidate the warranty by trying NVIDIA updates I know nothing about? Anybody out there can offer help? E-machines tech support I would rate at 0 stars max. Their people can't even drive your PC. Don't buy E-machines. -- skater61 | Guest

| worked on this w/ E-machines tech support for 70 min (nice gal got into it w/ me, even tho they are not supposed to work "software" stuff & will try to refuse you (threaten to put them on YouTube), but if you contact MS, they won't touch it either b/c the keycode has "OEM" in it, indicating E-machines has modified Vista. So apparently you are just supposed to throw the computer out the window when this happens?? talk about an entire industry that abdicates responsibility to their customers. Alas.). Anyway, bottom line, nice tech support gal and all her pals up the escalation ladder tried every trick in the book but in the end I had to re-build the whole computer from bottom up from the System Restore disks. This resulted in me ending up w/ straight Vista not E-machine Vista, loaded on, minor improvement. backing up regular but have not yet tried the restore. Best of luck to you. -- skater61 | Guest
