Canon Purported Scanner

Just got a Canon LiDE 80 Color Image Scanner. A pretty paper weight.
It came with purported Apple software: CanoScan Toolbox 4.1 a driver
installer and Adobe PhotoElements 2.0. Altogether I've had more
crashes in one day than in the past year combined, and probably
multiplied by 8.
When I attempt to scan through to PhotoElements from the Toolbox it
crashes. It has actually worked a couple of times if PhotoElements is
open. But maybe 2 out of 30 times only. The rest of the time crashes.
If I try to scan from PhotoElements it too has worked about 2 out of 30
times. Same with Photostudio. It has never managed to print directly
to the printer, though once it didn't crash but whirred in
communication with the printer for 20 minutes producing nothing.
And so on. I've been at this off and on for a total of about 4 hours.
Reinstalled everything from most of the inaccurate information that
came with the item, then downloaded what appear to be identical
istallers from their website. They seem to operate a little
differently but produce nothing.
Has anybody ever manage to make this junk heap of playschool programs
work right?
I'll be taking it back, I assume, to Microcenter next week and getting
a printer that really CAN work with Mac OS X. Any suggestions in that
regard would be appreciated too.
Damn, the Canon sureshot camer worked so *seamlessly* with OS X, I
thought this might too...
