Can't access a second hard drive!

Posted: 02-07-2007, 06:36 AM
I installed my old hard drive as a second hard drive in windows Vista. I put
my old programs on it so I could add my pictures etc to the new hard drive &
then format the old hard drive to use. Big problem, it doesn't matter what I
do to change permissions. I am the administrator & the only user on this
computer. I need to use my second hard drive to get my old stuff off of it.
Windows Vista says I don't have permission to do so even as administrator!
Why do I have to have permission to use my old hard drive? Can I turn all
this off so I can access this hard drive. Even when I tried to do it
indiviually this stupid operating system won't let me. I am getting
desperate because I have a business to run & can't get to my files! Please
help.
Thanks,
Debbie

Hello,

Try this:

This will require some familiarity with the command prompt.

- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click it when it appears under programs, and click Run As
Administrator
- cd to the drive that contains the files you need access to (e.g., cd f
- cd to the folder that you need access to (e.g., cd
f:\documents)
- Type: takeown /F . /A /R /D Y
- Type: icacls . /grant USERF) /T /C /L /Q
(Where USER is your user name)
- Press enter
