Can't access files on XP network

Posted: 12-02-2003, 01:43 AM
Two XPs connected to router. Printer installed on one
and shared and other PC has no trouble seeing and using.
Have "shared" both hard drives on both PCs but only some
folders allow access; all others do not. Can't figure
out how to allow access (sharing) without "sharing" each
folder individually.

It would help if you told us which version of XP you have and which
folders do and don't allow access.

By default, Windows XP doesn't allow sharing the Documents and
Settings, Program Files, or Windows folders. You can share subfolders
within those folders, e.g. you can share "C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express" and access that folder from another computer on the network.

If you have Windows XP Professional, you can permanently disable
Simple File Sharing, which removes those sharing restrictions:

1. Open My Computer and click Tools | Folder Options | View.
2. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
3. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended).

If you have Windows XP Home Edition, there's no easy solution. The
safest thing is to share individual subfolders, as mentioned above.
