Can't browse to other computer on workgroup

Posted: 04-13-2007, 01:12 AM
I have two computers on a Vista Ultimate workgroup. My main computer is
connected to Linksys WRK54G router by CAT5. The other is wireless, using a
Linksys WUSB54G adapter. From the wired computer, I can view the network map
in Network and Sharing Center. I can see the remote computer in 'Network'
from the wired workstation. But if I attempt to open the remote computer
from the wired computer, it won't open.

When I attempt to open the remote computer now it fails, and diagnostics
tell me it can't be pinged. Apparently I've changed something that messed it
up. This was working before. In the interim, I adjusted Windows OneCare
firewall to enable remote assistance from the wired computer to the remote
computer. I was trying to make an unsolicited offer work in a non-domain
environment, but couldn't. It only works for solicited offers.

What settings must I revise to make sure that's not interfering?

Additional info: I can browse from the remote computer to the wired
computer. It appears to me that I have a firewall setting problem, but don't
really know.

Thanks in advance for useful suggestions.

For a test, disable the all firewall and security software, can you ping each other?

I turned off the firewall and tried to ping by ip address. Got no response,
but network browse now works. Obviously I can't leave the firewall off, but
any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot from here?

There is a software called NetWorkMagic which should eliminate all network
and sharing problems.

I had some other network issues between Vista and XP, I downloaded the free
version and it worked like magic!

check it out! http://www.networkmagic.com

Thanks, but I figured it out. I just came back her to post my solution and
found your message.

For some reason, the OneCare firewall one the remote computer was set to
'Restricted'. I don't recall doing that, but I'm the only administrator on
the computer. My kids could not have made the change, so I must be the
guilty party. I changed it to automatic, like the local computer, and all is
well.

NetWork Magic did not work for me. Things were the same after installation
as before. Even an extended call to their support line did not help. I
still can't access my old XP computer from the Visa computer.
