Default Can't find answer anywhere! clip capture

Nobody seems to be able to answer this simple question.

While playing a movie I want to capture certain clips. Just simply start
capture, stop capture and save clip to disk.

Nothing I have can do this Moviemaker, Media player, Nero Showtime etc.

Can someone please tell me how to do what everybody on youtube can do.

This is a movie you are playing on your computer?
Is the movie saved to your computer?
If so then you import it into movie maker and edit like any other video.
Check out "basic editing 1" on this page

The video needs to be in either dv-avi or wmv to be imported into MM, if it
isn't use one of teh conversion apps on this page to change it.

Phew - Certainly plenty of choices there. I have tried a few so far but
nothing works in a simple intuitive way (many require abut 9 steps to
convert followed by editing and reconverting and then saving in one format
and then converting again. Some don't work at all)

I didn't think what I wanted to do would be so difficult.
