| I see several posts advising people to right click a file or directory, click on properties, security tab and permissions to grant or deny user account permissions. When I click properties, there is no security tab, and no reference to permissions. I have Windows XP Home Edition. Am I missing something? | Guest

| I think this is because the drive is not formatted as NTFS... Correct me if I am wrong though... Chris "Jeff" <jfwsmith@msn.com> wrote in message news:1c6301c37380$5680de00$a101280a@phx.gbl... Quote:

| No, its because he's running XP Home. The only time the Security tab is visible in XP Home is when: A) The hard disk is formatted NTFS B) You're logged into the built-in Administrator account, via Safe Mode. -- Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows XP/ Windows Smart Display Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes http://www.dougknox.com -------------------------------- Associate Expert ExpertZone - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone -------------------------------- Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit. If you are not joined to a domain or are running Windows XP Home Edition and want to view the Security tab, view the Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions section in this article. Troubleshooting If the Security tab is not available and you cannot configure permissions for users and groups: a.. The file or folder that you want to apply permissions to is not on an NTFS file system drive. You can set permissions only on drives that are formatted to use the NTFS file system. b.. Simple file sharing is enabled. By default, simplified sharing is enabled in Windows XP unless you are on a domain. To work around this behavior, disable Simplified Sharing. c.. Note that you cannot disable simplified sharing in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. | Guest

| The basics are available in XP home too. Therefore I have written an extension that brings up the security tab in XP Home as well (no hack). Feel free to download the installer (checked for viruses of cause) at: http://www.fajo.de/sware/files/xpfse...t_Setup_EN.exe This is a multilingual version (English, German,Dutch). | Thanks, I'll give it a look, but I'll have to do another Home install to do it. -- Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows XP/ Windows Smart Display Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes http://www.dougknox.com -------------------------------- Associate Expert ExpertZone - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone -------------------------------- Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
