cant insatll usb printer only option lpt1

hi there hope someone can help me. i repair printers for freinds and others.
but of late when trying to install a usb printer of any make, windows will
find the printer and start the new hardware wizard, gets as far as starting
to copy the usb driver to create the virtual printer port then stops with a
message saying that the data is invalid, only option left is lpt1, not much
use when its a usb only printer !!!.
i can install them on my laptop with no problems. so i know its a problem
with my desktop pc. any help would be most appreciated

Install the software BEFORE connecting the printer to the PC.

cari thanks for your input but ive been doing this for sometime now
installing printers to test, they all install ok on any other pc, just not my
desktop pc so i know its a issue with this pc, it wont create a virtual usb
printer port as it allways did before. this is where the problem lyes just
dont know how to get it back to this status again
