Can't Install due to "error code 7"!

Posted: 09-03-2003, 06:00 PM
I've just assembled a brand new computer utilizing an
Asus P4C800-E deluxe Motherboard with an Intel 2.6 P4.
When I try to install XP (Home) from my new OE disk it
begins the process then flashes the message "File\i386
\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7.
Setup cannot continue."
According to the Micrtosoft knowledghe base this is a
problem when upgrading from Windows 98 or ME -- but I'm
not! I'm trying to make an original clean installation
of XP from a new CD.
How do I get around this?

I'm grateful for the swift response -- but it gets me
NOWHERE! I've gone through the entire list of
troubleshooting advice proposed by Nicholas and nowhere
do any of its topics address my problem! Which is being
unable to make a NEW installation of XP (no previous
versions of anything present) on known-compatible
hardware. The XP installer plainly is confused and (see
my msg) appears to think multiple processors are
involved.

Has anyone else experienced this version of XP hell??
Has anyone found a way out? IS there a way out?

A further note to my problem: The Intel processor is a
hyperthreading one, but I have turned this feature OFF in
case it was confusing the XP home installer. But with
Hyperthreading off I still get the error 7 message!!

Read and follow the instructions in the following articles:

When upgrading Win98 or WinME to Windows XP,
setup issues 'ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded - Error Code 7'?
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBM/tip6200/rh6251.htm

How to Force a Hardware Abstraction Layer During an Upgrade or New Installation of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;299340

"To force in a system Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) during an upgrade or installation of Windows XP,
note that during the Text-mode phase of Setup, you receive the following informational message across the
bottom of the screen:

Press F6 if you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver.

When this message appears, press F5. You can now make HAL choices by viewing the different options.
Note that if you instead press F7, the Standard PC HAL loads, and the ACPI compliance check is bypassed".

Can't Install due to "error code 7"!

I'm still in limbo. I've tested my two sticks of DDRAM
512 PC3200 memory (they're fine) and disabled
hypethreading for my Pentium 4 2.6 processor (just in
case) and EVERY install attempt from my OEM Windows XP
Home CD is stymied after the installer inspects my
hardware. It STILL returns that "File ... can't be
loaded." Has ANYONE been in this region of hell before
me?
