Can't install MSDE

Posted: 03-14-2005, 09:14 AM
Hi,

I had MSDE installed on Win2k before no problem, just moved my development
machine to another
PC running XPPro. Now i can't install MSDE, it goes through the setup but
nothing gets installed even
after reboot. SO i can't install the database. Is this a known bug?

Regards
ms

MS,

This NG deals with XP Embedded only, recommend post to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Thanks,
JC

Hi John

Its the MSDE that comes with the XPE Eval disk that i installed so this
post is related to XP Embedded surely.
I've looked at the event log but just an installation message that the
setup failed. Are there any known issues
with the MSDE provided with the eval disk running on XPPro.

ms,

See if these links are of any help:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en...tionFailed.asp
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en...orMessages.asp

PS. If there is no info on why MSDE engine fails during install and you cannot catch the reason, launch the install with having
monitoring tools up and running - Filemon, Regmon. This may show you more information on why it is failing.

PPS. you mention you moved to XP Pro. Make sure you are working with XP Pro SP1 at least.

Hi KM,

Thanks, i've already tried the links. However when i run filemon and regmon
and then the install i get
the following mesages in filemon. File not found sqlstp.dll also other
files not found are sqlsut.dll , sqdedev.dll , sqlresld.dll.
Are these dlls part sof XPPro or are they supposed to be on the Eval CD
with MSDE.

I am running XPPro SP2. I've already built my image XPE SP1 on a Win2K
machine but have run into
basic problems when trying to install on a XPPro SP2 machine (on which i
will move to XPE SP2 when i can
install the tools).

ms,

The sqlxxx.dll file you mentioned below are not part of MSDE installation. At least they are not on my working XPE Dev machines.
Most likely these are not the cause for the installation failure. You may want to look into the mon.logs once again for more info
there.

Btw, was it a clean install of XP Pro SP2? I mean you don't have SQL Server running on that machine?

After all, MSDE is not XPE ToolKit specific application. You can either install SQL server instead or search for MSDE install errors
in MS KB and MSDN.

Hi KM

Yes it was clean install of XpPro SP2 so nothing else installed. One thing
i noticed was that the installation
rolls back and then no directories are created. I've searched on google
for anything similar, one place it mentioned
that i need File and Printer sharing enabled, i don't have this Windows
component in my build. Will this have anything
to do with it?

Hi KM

I've installed File and Printer sharing for Microsoft networks and now the
install works.
Don't know what this has to do with an msde install but my problem is
fixed. Thanks for
your help.

ms,

Glad you fixed it.
Actually MSDE goes with default install settings that is possible to modify and, probably, eliminate the need for the File and
Printer sharing dependency.
