can't log on!!! new computer, new xp, password won't work!

I am trying to install XP pro on a new Dell. I just
assigned the administrator's password and the system will
not accept it - how do I get past this? I cant even get
to windows to configure the rest of the setup...any advice
would be greatly appreciated. BTW - it's not a caps issue,
or anything like that.
