Can't ping or telnet a Vista Business PC

Posted: 05-06-2008, 03:43 PM
Good morning,

I am trying to back up the configuration of a Cisco switch. I am using
TFTP. After accessing the switch I try to ping and telnet to my Vista
Business PC. I can't do either. I have Windows Defender turned off and I
have shut down my Symantec Endpoint Protection. Under Windows features I
have Simple TCP/IP services, Telnet Client and Telnet Server turned on. I
also have TFTP client turned on. What might be stopping me from accessing
my PC??

Thanks much for any thoughts you might have.

Two possibilities:

1. A firewall program is blocking access to the computer.

2. Vista thinks that the computer is on a public network. Go to
Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center and configure it as a
private network.

Thanks for the input. Please excuse my ignorance but I don't see in the
Networking where you can specify a public or private network. Can you point
me in the right direction?

Thanks.

You're welcome. Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
You'll see your network name, and next to it will be either "(Private
network)" or "Public network"). If it says Public, click the word
"Customize" and select "Private".

Hi. I don't see anything like that. All I see is Domain Network. When I
click customize the only thing I can change is the icon. Any other
thoughts?

Ah, I didn't know that your computer is part of a domain network. I
thought that it was part of a workgroup network.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how to configure a domain computer. I
recommend that you consult with the network administrator(s) at your
company for help.

Vista's firewall has ICMP echo reply (=ping) disabled by default, because of
security.
tutorial to enable it is for example here http://nic.phys.ethz.ch/readme/226
Next time: google 'enable ping in vista'
