Can't Play CD's

Posted: 09-20-2003, 07:33 PM
Hi everyone:

I updated to WMP 9.0 a few weeks ago and then to the next
revision up from that (9.0.0.2?). Now I am unable to
play CD's. They open in WMP and "play" but there is no
sound. Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks

can't play CD's

I'm trying to play newly purchased CD's on this computer and the Windows Media Player (that came with my computer) kept sending me the message that it could not play the files. So I un-installed this Media Player and don't know what to do next. THX FOR HELP.

It may not be the fault of WMP at all. Many new CDs employ copy protection
schemes which prevent them from being played on your computer. Which
particular CDs are you having trouble with?

Thanks for reply. There have been a series of classical music CD's newly purchased from Amazon. They work on my CD boom box but not on the computer. I can play things that I've purchased on Itunes, so their player works. It's a different player. Should I re-install the WMP? Or a different player? "Real" only works for a short time, then expires.----- Ian & Lorraine wrote: -----

Hi, Jane:

Try playing a couple of older CDs. If they work, then you'll know that WMP
is working fine, and it's something about those classical CDs which is
causing your problems. Do your older CDs play properly? If not, the rest
of my reply can safely be ignored.

There are a few different copy protection schemes being employed on music
CDs lately, and you'll often find some reference to it somewhere on the
cover of the CD. These schemes are all designed to make it difficult to
play the CDs on our computers so that we can't copy them, but unfortunately
we also can't listen to the music we just paid for either. Fortunately,
from what I've read, all of these copy protection technologies can be
defeated- do a Google search on any information you can find on your CD
cover.

Here's something to try: Hold the Shift key as you pop in your classical CD.
This simple move defeats one of the current copy protection schemes and
allows you to play the disc: http://news.com.com/2100-1025-5087875.html A
previous approach to copy protection was defeated by a black magic marker:

Let me know,
Ian.

Hi Ian -- thanks for your advice. I tried an old CD -- one that I know I could play on my old computer, and it won't play. But isn't that because I've alread uninstalled the WMP? Should I just download a new WMP from the Internet? Jane

I have just upgraded from windows 98 to XP because just got an ipod & it
doesnt support 98. So, got a cd & left it to install. Installed i-tunes.
But now cds wont play at all. The tracklistings come up in itunes but wont
play & in windows media player it comes up with an error message saying that
the sound device may not be properly installed etc. But it wont play on
anything! What could the problem be and what can i do?

Please help asap.

When you upgraded your OS (Operating System) from 98 to XP, you'll also
have to upgrade your soundcard drivers to be compatible with XP. You can
go to the manufacturers website to do that and they are free. To find out
info about your soundcard, go here:
Rightclick your My Computer icon on your desktop and click Properties.
Click the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button and scroll down
to Sound, Video, etc and click the small + sign and there you are.
