Can't re-install fax service in XP

Posted: 04-15-2006, 10:27 PM
The XP fax service has been working fine until recently when it would hang
when trying to print to the fax printer. I tried uninstalling using Windows
Components Wizard and then re-installing. The re-install goes through the
motions and says that it was successful, however the Fax Services in Windows
Components Wizard is still unticked and no fax printer is installed.

The re-install does not give any error messages or seek files from a CD. I
am running Windows XP Pro, with SP2.

If you require any specific log files than can you please provide me the
path and filename so that I can find them

This problem appears to occur because the security data base is corrupted as
documented here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/

Try the relevant hotfix.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the information, I tried the steps outlined in KB Article 278316
but this didn't work. As a result of folowing these steps I still have a file
called C:\WINDOWS\security\Database\secedit.old

The error message that appears in the file
C:\Windows\Security\logs\scecomp.log is as follows:

04/18/2006 20:42:04 Error=2 Update Service
Fax
Security=DA;;LCRP;;;WD)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;; SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWL OCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

I don't know how to access the hotfix? Have I followed your instructions or
have I missed something?

You must call Microsoft to obtain hotfixes.

Hi Russ,

I contacted Microsoft, unfortunately the Hot Fix was not appropriate for my
issue. They took me through a number of different things including registry
changes, repair processes etc. None of them worked.

I thought I would get back to you with what did work. Norton Internet
Security/Antivirus 2006 needed to be disabled before running the Microsoft
components wizard.

For the most part all Norton Product disable Windows XP Fax in one way or
another.

No, no, no! Use the hotfix!
</RANT>

KB Article 278316 is for Windows 2000 systems only. KB Article 844108
doesn't mention that. You have to read *though* 278316 and see which
systems it is applicable to in order to realize that. 278316 should be
edited., IMHO>

You have to tell them, no, I don't want support, I want the hotfix.
Then they give it to you. It's easy. Takes a little schmoozing, though.

I am installing the hotfix soon. I am going to research it a bit before
I execute it.

Well, that was disappointing. The hotfix didn't come with instructions.
It unzipped into two executables. Which to install first? So I asked
via email. They said to call.

Melinda transferred me to Byron. Byron transferred me to Lucy. Lucy
said the case was closed and that she could'n't help. So I called back
and I am talking with Logan now, who says he is going to put me through
to the XP group.

I'll report later.

OK, I am faxing again!

Bonnie at Microsoft got me straightened out. She had me do a clean
boot, and I was able to install, then use Fax Services just like that.
The hotfix didn't do anything as far as I could tell. Some program I
have installed is interfering with fax.

Now, to progress from the clean boot to the usual system, I will divide
and conquer; that is, I will turn off half my services or start up
items, and see which half has the offender, then turn off half of that
half. It's going to take a while.

At least the basics work. And my computer is faster now. I wonder what
all those services do?
