Can't save a document to an offline folder

Posted: 05-21-2007, 07:18 AM
I have a laptop that connects to 2 different networks depending on where I
am: Work, or Home.
When I try to save a new Word 2000 document to an offline folder of the
network I'm not connected to, the 'Save As' window shows 'Network' but when I
click on it I can only see the computers on the network I'm currently
connected to.
E.g. when I'm at home, I can't save the document to the offline folders from
my Work networked computer.
I can't even save to my desktop and drag to the offline folder.

The same thing happens with Excel 2000.
How can I save new Office documents to my offline folders when I'm not
connected to the network please?

Yours sincerely,

In case this hasn't yet been resolved, please let me know the following-
1. Are you able to save other document/file types in your offline folder
while offline?
2. Do you see this behavior if you are not connected to any network at all?
3. Have you tried browsing to the share directory directory by typing in
\\yourservername\yoursharename into explorer?

Thanks,
Shubhankar

Dear Shubhankar,
Thank you for your response to my post. In relation to your 3 numbered
questions:
1. Saving documents from Vista’s Notepad and Wordpad to Offline Folders is
no problem ; the Vista-type ‘Save as’ window shows the Offline folders in
the left-hand pane.
Saving documents from Word 2000 and Excel 2000 to Offline Folders is very
difficult, as follows:
o Trying to save a Word or Excel file by navigating through folders in the
‘Save As’ window doesn’t work because when the ‘Network’ folder is reached
only the computers online on the network are shown.
The offline computer (in this case, ‘CHRIS’) does not appear.
o The only way to save Word or Excel files in the Offline folders was to
type the complete path (\\CHRIS\My Documents) in the ‘File name’ box.
The ‘Save As’ window then opened at that folder and the document could be
saved there.
Trying to type a backslash (\) in the ‘Save In’ box didn’t work because it
just causes the dropdown menu to appear.
o Typing the full Path and File Name is impractical, especially in the case
of long path names.
This is compounded because the response to the keystrokes is sluggish when
typing the path in the ‘File name’ box.
I should perhaps add that the opening of Office 2000 'Save' windows is
sluggish compared to my old Windows XP SP2 computer, as is saving by 'Ctrl+S'.
o Once the desired offline folder is reached by step 2. above, it is
possible to move up the path using the ‘Up One Level’ button, but even after
passing up through the path to the offline computer (in this case, ‘CHRIS’)
and arriving at the ‘Network’ folder, CHRIS is not shown there.
o Changing Word to run in XP SP2 Compatibility Mode made no difference.
2. Disconnecting the computer’s network cable seemed to make no difference,
except that Word’s ‘Save as’ window took a long time to open, and when it
finally did it showed the other, now disconnected, computer in the ‘Network’
folder.
3. I trust my answer to 1. above answered this question.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Yours sincerely,
David G.
