Can't see SATA XP Hard drive with in Vista 64bit

Posted: 11-05-2007, 03:33 AM
I built a new PC with Vista on it. I took out my SATA Secondary XP hard drive
and pluged it into my Vista pc. Within Windows Explorer, I don't see the hard
drive. Within Computer Management, I can see the hard drive but shows now
information and says its a Dyamice drive instead of Basic. All I have on the
drive is data, like picutes, music, docs, and email. What do I need to do to
retrieved the data of the drive onto the Visat Drive?

Thanks,

Maybe the XP drive was FAT32, and Vista wants NTFS.
I ended up copying the contents of a FAT32 XP drive onto
a USB external NTFS formatted drive. Then copied from
this drive onto the NTFS Vista.

Thanks for the input.
The XP is NTFS and does work, at least in my XP box. I set this hard drive
just as storage. It's the Secondary in my XP PC.
In my VIsta PC, the BIOS recognizes it as well, but just can't see it to
transfer data off it onto my Vista PC.

Hi, Corey.

There is a good Help file in Disk Management that explains, among other
things, how to Move Disks to Another Computer. The Help file's "mindset" is
oriented to big computers with lots of hard drives, it seems, and we have to
read it carefully to deal with the problems that are more common to us with
simpler systems. We have to "comb out" all those instructions for dynamic
disks (which few of us use) and GUID disks (which almost none of us use).
But, if we thread our way through, we will find what we need. The Vista
Help and Support file also has some information (search for "foreign disk",
not just "foreign" and look at the last item on the list).

In DM, click Help | Help Topics, then type "foreign" into the search box and
click List Topics. There should be 3 topics listed; the first two apply to
your problem. The key paragraph for you is this one on the "Move Disks to
Another Computer" page:
"Detect new disks
"On the new computer, open Disk Management. Click Action and then click
Rescan Disks. Right-click any disk marked Foreign, click Import Foreign
Disks, and then follow the instructions on your screen."

Since I don't have any "foreign disks at the moment", I can't see the
instructions that should pop up. But, unless you have actually used dynamic
disks in WinXP on this drive, you can ignore the warnings about converting
to basic disks; your disk almost certainly is already a basic disk.

Please report back your experience. We've had several similar questions in
the last few days and I want to be sure that I'm giving the right advice.

The problem with a dynamic disk is you just can't yank it from the
computer in which it was created, install it in another computer and
expect it to work, because it won't. I would put the drive back in the
old computer, network the two computers, and copy over the lan.
