Can't use a shared XP printer

Posted: 05-18-2007, 08:20 PM
I am trying to access a shared printer (on an XP machine) from a new Vista
laptop. Networking is configured correctly enough so that the Vista machine
can see the XP machine in the workgroup, and can see that the printer is
there. However, when trying to add the printer on the Vista machine, we get a
"Windows cannot connect to the printer" and an error message 0x0000046a.

I googled that error and found a small number of similar issues. The only
solution I found was to increase the value of the IRPStackSize registry key
on the hosting machine. I tried that but it did not work for me.

Anyone have a workaround to enable the Vista machine to get to the printer?

Thanks,

Barry

Barry,

I like to attack printer sharing problems in layers. First, make sure that file
sharing is working. Once you get that working, then look at the differences
between file sharing and printer sharing. The two aren't equal, for several
reasons.
