can't view other PCs on workgroup

I have a customer that is trying to put a XP laptop on an
existing network. She says she can get online and check
email but can't see any other resources on her network.
Also she uses SOCKS to login to a remote server. The
SOCKS should pop up when trying to login but it doesn't.
I think the problems are related.
I had her check settings of another PC, they seem the
same, address and workgroup are setup properly.
What am I missing? Please help.

Ask her to switch off all firewalls, especially the XP
firewall on the connection and try again.

Is this a Domain or a workgroup? are there firewalls
involved? if a domain, what is the authentication server's
OS? if a windows server domain, has her computer been
properly joined to the domain? has the TCP/IP stack been
properly initialized? does she have the proper protocols
installed for her network?---just some ideas.
