| I put Vista beta 2 on one of the five machines in my workgroup (wired network, static IP addresses). The other machines can see and read the shared drives, but not write to them ("Access is denied"). Assuming this was a permissions issue, I gave "Everyone" full control on the drives, but still no joy. Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks. | Guest

| I also occasionally get this message on my server share - I can't understand it either. However I went through the properties of the server share on my server, and made sure that specific users on my Vista machine had access (read and write) and the guest (test account) had only read permissions - after that it was fixed. But a bug wouldn't go a miss )-- Zack Whittaker » ZackNET Enterprises: www.zacknet.co.uk » MSBlog on ResDev: www.msblog.org » Vista Knowledge Base: www.vistabase.co.uk » This mailing is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | Is it necessary to grant some sort of permission on the Vista "server" to specific users of the other machines? On XP workgroups, "Everyone" applies to everyone on the network. "Zack Whittaker" wrote: Quote:

| Turn off simple file sharing. Open an Explorer window, click Organize > Folder Options > View (tab) > uncheck "Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended)" > ok. | I created a share on the vista machine that gives full permisson to everyone. I can't access this share on the XP machine without providing credentials. They are both in the same network too. Either machine can't see the other when I go to veiw workgroup computer. I also turned off "Use Sharing Wizard" Something is not right here. "Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" wrote: Quote:

| turning off simple file sharing didn't work for me either. went into safe mode and fussed with permissions and ownership and basically loosened everything up. the remaining problem for me is that the xp machines can't write to the shares on the vista machine. "anthonymel" wrote: Quote:

| Maybe its UAP, try disabling and see if it helps. Click Start > All Programs Quote:
system for changes to take effect. If that does not help, Open Control Panel (set to "Class View") > open Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab > check "Network Discovery" > OK, try accessing the share again from XP. Also remember disable Simple File Sharing on the XP machine, maybe that was causing the blockage. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "anthonymel" <anthonymel@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5E1F3A05-8F5F-4F92-AACB-7DC2010FDFEF@microsoft.com... | Ok here's what I did for the folder sharing problem. It used to be in XP that if you set permissions to Everyone they could access that share without setting any security for that folder. Apprently Vista does not work this way. Not only do you have to set the permissions for Everyone you also got to set the security for Everyone. I set both permissions and security to read access and I was able to access the share from my XP Machine with no problems or security warnings. I also noticed that if you are working on a wireless network Vista like to recreate the network again. So make sure you don't have dups of your network going on with different settings. As for the network discovery I'll give you suggestions a try. Here's another problem if someone else can check out. Create a share and give administrators group full permission and full security. Then try to access that drive from an XP machine using a username from the adminstrators group other than the local administrator. I keep getting access denied errors. Thanks "Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" wrote: Quote:

| Won't help - if the permissions are still the same on the network share, changing a layout of what to share won't actually change the permissions - so essentially you're just trying to add a files to a still broken network share. Try turning off UAC - might help? http://www.vistabase.co.uk/welcome.p...ity/disableuap -- Zack Whittaker » ZackNET Enterprises: www.zacknet.co.uk » MSBlog on ResDev: www.msblog.org » Vista Knowledge Base: www.vistabase.co.uk » This mailing is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
