Capture PAL with NTSC camera

Posted: 01-17-2004, 04:11 AM
Hi folks hope someone can help,
I have an NTSC mini DV camcorder (JVC 820U). Someone in the UK sent me a tape that's recorded in PAL format, my camcorder can't read it but I figure that there must be some way to capture it to my computer using my camera. I've tried but the file is unreadable ..........any ideas?

Thanks,
George.

Well you could either buy a PAL camera or take the tape to a store to get it converted to NTSC format, there is no other way to do it if you dont have the right camera.

You think I should buy a thousand dollar camera that would be no use here in Canada other than to convert one tape?

I don't live anywhere near a store that converts between the 2 in mini DV format.

You cannot capture it with your own camera... it isn't PAL compatible.

Call your friend in the UK.... tell him or her to capture the footage and
burn it to a DVD or CDR/W in DV-AVI or WMV format. You will be able to read
that data.

If you can find a PAL digital camcorder on EBay or similar, (even the
cheapest will do) you could also do it that way, but it you aren't willing
to spend the $s, the tape is almost useless. I say almost, because tape is
tape. You can still put it in your digital camcorder and use it to record
whatever you want in NTSC. There is absoutely no difference in the actual
tape.

Thanks Cari,
One other thing I'd considered was that if I could find a 'corder that played both PAL & NTSC, I could borrow it to download into my computer .......do you know if there's such a beast? It's the wrong tiem of year for finding a tourist from the UK to help me out, maybe I'll have to wait! )

I don't know of a multistandard digital camcorder.... there are a few
multistandard multisystem VHS VCRs and I think I heard that there were
analog camcorders that were multistandard.... but now we're getting in the
pricey stuff.

With the British pound so strong against the dollar right now, it's probably
not the best time to be thinking about purchasing from EBay.co.uk, but you
might find a bargain there!!!???

Or, just grab a British tourist the next time one comes into town!!!! Now
if you were in somewhere like Orlando, they rent out PAL camcorders.... (for
the tourists who break theirs or forgot to pack them!)

But I'm guessing that's probably only found where a lot of European tourists
flock to...!

Sorry not to be able to assist much future.
