CD / DVD Rom drive is not working

Posted: 07-18-2007, 07:10 AM
Dont know what the heck is going on. My CD/DVD rom is not showing up and
when I place a disc of any form its not reading or loading up. I use Vista
Home Premium and everything has been cool up to this point. Would greatly
appreciate anyone's assistance. When I go to my computer, all the drives
show up, just not the D drive.
I dont use Itunes, however I do use Napster.

This exact same thing happened to my girlfriend with her new computer about a
week after she bought it. What brand is your PC and what model?

wfroadrunner,

It's hard to say, but the following link may provide a solution. Follow the
instructions on the following Microsoft article to remove upper and lower
filters:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

Sometimes this solution works, but who knows until you try it. Another
approach is to uninstall the drive in Device Manager (under its Properties)
and reboot to see whether Windows fixes the issue when it reboots.

Tried your advice, however, in the regedit there are five options... root,
user, machine, users and configuration. When I hit local machine, the right
side states default- reg_sz - value not set. I have a dell xps m140 labtop.
All help is greatly appreciated.

wfroadrunner,

The instructions say to look here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

If that's where you looked and there's nothing there, then the instructions
don't apply.

wfroadrunner,

OK, here are a few mote troubleshooting steps to explore: First, does
Device Manager include the CD/DVD-ROM drive? Does Device Manager display any
type of error condition for the drive? Under the drive Properties, do you
see any messages other than this device is working properly? If the drive
appears in Device Manager, under its Properties, select uninstall and reboot.

Second, in the event Device Manager has no entry for the drive, enter BIOS
to determine whether BIOS detects the drive.

Roxio and/or Nero have been known to be the source of optical drives
disappearing in some systems. Do you have either of these applications
installed? If you do, try uninstalling it to see whether that improves the
situation. Post back.

The same thing is happenning with my TSST corp CD/DVDW SH-S182D ATA and the
message when I open the Device Management refers to Code 39. I've read other
similar messages about this subject in this group but I'm not sure if that
is the case: I refer to article 929461. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ana,

Yes, follow the instructions in that article, the link to which is in my
first post above. You may want to print it out first (or take notes) so that
you something to refer to while you're performing the procedure. Post back
on results.
