CD not recognized but DVDs work fine in Pineer DVD+-RW DR-K17Y

Posted: 09-28-2007, 03:48 AM
I can play DVD's fine but when i put a CD in it makes a churning sounds and
nothing happens. When I click on the icon for the CD drive it churns and
opens and tells be to insert a CD.

Is there anything I can try to get this to work as I cannot install software
that I need

Thanks

Combo drives use two lasers - one for CDs and one for DVDs. It sounds as
though the CD laser has died. You can try a drive cleaning tool (sold at
computer and office supply stores) or swap the drive out for a
known-working one. If you have no problems with the test drive, then you
know it is a hardware issue and you should replace the original drive.

You don't say but is your laptop a Dell? If it is then go to there web site
and download the latest firmware for the k17y. I believe I ran across it
under the XP drivers.

Yes it is a dell and I found and downloaded the firmware but it did not make
a difference. I might have to find something else.

thanks for the tip though

I wasn't sure if it would help but I had just seen it on the Dell site. I us
a DVR-K17 pioneer on my Dell Inspiron 6000 and it works fine. It must be a
difference in the two drives.
