cd rom

I get a consistent message when I insert a cd into the
drive.

This is the message.
The drive or network connection that the
shortcut "Shortcut to CD Drive.Ink" refers to is
unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly
inserted or the network resource is available, and then
try again

I have cleaned with a disc cleaner to no avail.
Please help

CD ROM

My friends computer is really screwed up, I have to start
it up off a boot disk. I am going to reinstall windows
for him but it will not access the D Drive. I have the
drivers but have no idea what to do with them or what
command is needed.

Set the BIOS to look for bootable devices in the following order:

FDD, CD, HDD

(floppy, CD, hard drive)

Put the XP CD in the drive and when you see the following line on the screen
at startup "Press Any Key to Boot from CD..." press a key... any key... even
the spacebar will do.

Follow the instructions on the screen - ignore through the F2 for the
Recovery Console, go through the F8 for the EULA and when Windows finds
itself on the hard drive it will offer the option of a Repair Install.
