Changing admin account name

Posted: 11-23-2005, 02:45 PM
I have a problem with an XP Pro installation, a zealous tech decided to set
the computer up without my knowledge, and set the initial admin account name
to 'sa'. I needed the admin account name to be something specific. I have
since changed the name of the account to what it needed to be, but I still
see references to the old 'sa' account name all over the place.

For instance, the folder c:\Documents and Settings\sa\ can not be renamed.
As well, whenever you log off, the Start menu says "Log off sa". There appear
to be many places where the 'sa' account name is used for certain values.

Is there any solution to resetting all old values to new values using the
new account name?

You're going to have to create a new account with the correct
name and follow the procedure outlined here:

How do I copy a user profile in Windows XP?
http://www.petri.co.il/copy_user_pro...windows_xp.htm

The basic procedure is as follows:

1. Create the user account you really wanted. Log on and log
off with that account.
2. Log on with another account that's a member of the
adminstrators group. You can use either the built-in
Adminstrator account or an admin account you create just for
this process. The second approach is useful if the system is
running XP Home Edition since you need to boot into Safe Mode
in order to logon to the Adminstrator account.
3. Copy the User Profile from the sa account into the new
account.
4. Log on with the new account and see if it's setup correctly.
5. Delete the sa account if it's no longer needed. It's up to
you whether you retain that accounts files.

Good luck

Heres a quick method to solve your naming problem.

1) Backup any files you wanna keep from the SA profile.
2) log off, then logon with a different admin account
3) Delete the SA profile via system properties/advanced/user
profiles/settings.
4)Next, change the name of the built-in Administrative via Local Security
Policies to any name you like.
5)Now just logon to the new account. XP will create the profile with the
name you used in the Documents & settings folder.
