Default changing settings on mp3 playback

....i cannot seem to get my system to automatically open
my mp3's with any program other than windows media
player. i go to 'open with', 'choose program' i want to
open with and check 'always use this...' and nothing. it
change & still wants to use wmp. i even tried deleting
wmp, but it won't let me. i have gone to 'tools', 'folder
options', and 'file types' & tried to change it there.
but 'always use this...' and 'apply' are both gray.
