What would cause check disk not to run. I have Norton System Works and try
to run a check disk through it or I try to run it through windows and it
comes up and starts to run and a screen comes up briefly, not long enough
to read it and then it reboots and trys to start over and over but will
never run.

I'm not sure what stops it from running but mine will never complete. The
only way to run it is to boot from the XP CD and use the repair console and
then run chkdsk /? to identify the correct switch.
If chkdsk runs on every boot-up then fails, run chkntfs /? from the cmd
prompt (assuming your disk is NTFS) and you can reset the boot time check.
