Click Start>Run, type MSCONFIG and click OK. See if there is "chkdsk" in
the Start Up tab. If so, make sure it is unchecked, click OK, and restart.

CHKDSK

Chkdsk replaces Scandisk in XP as I understand it. I've tried a scan or two
using "chkdsk c:/f" which happens once I reboot the computer. However,
unlike Scandisk.. I don't know what it found and fixed. Reason is the data
it reports shows for about 0.5 seconds.. and my poor tired old brain can't
make out what it says before it disappears.

Is there a way to view that report (make it stick on the screen longer?

Thanks, Bill

After you're back in Windows - go to the Event Viewer -
Application - and look for winlogon - that will give you
the Summary

Try this: Start>Run>Cmd This will get you into the "dos prompt" mode.
Then enter "chkdsk". If you get a message something to the effect "...file
not found..", then you will have to go to the directory when chkdsk lives -
on my computer that is C:/windows/system32. Then type in "chkdsk". You can
do a search from the start menu to find out where chkdsk.exe is. On my
computer the dos commands are in the system32 directory, which is the
"path". You can type in "path" after the "cmd" to see what your path is.

Good luck.

I thought I might run CHKDSK today for the first time. When it started it
said: 'F parameter not specified. Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.' It
then does a check and finishes without comment. Is this a problem? Can I
correct it? Thank you.

The F parameter means "fix" problems that are found. I
always like to run the first time without an automatic fix,
I want to see a list of found problems. If you get no
message it means there were no problems found.

Did you run the checkdisk from the command window, the
start/.../system tools menu, or the drive properties (my
computer)?

Run chkdsk /? to read what the "F" parameter is.

CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/i] [/C] [/L[:size]]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.

filename FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.

/F Fixes errors on the disk.
/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file
on the disk.
On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
(implies /F).
/L:size NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified number
of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays current
size.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
(implies /F).
/I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder
structure.

The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by
skipping certain checks of the volume.
