Default Cleaning out this newsgroup

I have several newsgroups that I follow with Windows Mail, in which I have
set up a button on the toolbar to "Mark All As Read".
Now I've noticed that all the other groups other than this one "mark as
read" as soon as I click the button, this newsgroup,
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general, takes a very long time to mark, at
least a couple of seconds or more.
Is there a reason for this, I don't think it's the amount of traffic or
posts, I can think of several possibilities but hesitate to air them for
fear of some posters taking umbrage to my ideas. :-)

I think it's because of the sheer number of messages you have stored under
"General". Try using Tools>Message Rules>News and setup a rule to delete
messages over 60 days old (or whatever number of days you wish). Note that
the rule will apply to all news groups not just General.

OOPS - I hit send too soon. The rule will apply to all newsgroups unless
you also also specify which newsgoups .

Instead of using 'Mark all read' use 'Mark as read'. This is much faster.

And it will only automatically be replied to new downloads. To apply it to
messages already downloaded it must be applied manually, and it won't work
manually on my 5472.
