The best patch would be to the college's wetware.

Sorry for my inexperience and they are probably brain
dead, but what is wetware? Thanks.

VERY common XP home problem. Most colleges have a work
around (patch) for this. Failing this you will need to
buy XP Pro and install it for her.

Is this a download patch that we can obtain or is there a
site to which we can direct the IT folks at the college?
Thanks.

I'd personally talk to one of the IT guys at her college to see if he's a
retard or soemthing.

XP SHOULD work with any network that you plug it into.
In my mind, there is no reason that XP would have any conflicts with a WIN2K
network. Infact, the computer I am running now has XP Pro and other
computers on my network are running 2K Pro.

Not very nice.

Not true. XP Home Edition can't join a domain. Lots of colleges set
up their networks as domains.

What does WIN2K have to do with anything, Mike? The question from
"ebailes" is about connecting to a Novell network. Do you know for
sure that XP Home can connect to a Novell network. I don't.

"Wetware" is a slang expression for "brains". It's a takeoff on
"hardware" and "software".

Do you know for sure whether XP Home is compatible with a Novell
network, Bob? I don't. I've never used a Novell network. Have you?

"Ebailes", have your daughter ask the college network people exactly
what the problem is and how they suggest fixing it. It might involve
downloading and installing a Novell NetWare client program or
upgrading to Windows XP Professional.

1. No clue. 2. No. (Now that I think of it, I may
have, for a day or so, about seven years ago.)
But whether it isn't compatible with XP, or whether
it is and the college is telling them wrong, the college
needs to patch its "wetware". In my view, it is not
acceptable for a college network not to be compatible
with The standard operating system. (Novell needs to
fix its wetware too, if their network software truly is not
compatible with Windows XP (maybe the college
just needs an upgrade)).

I'm not aware that anyone has designated Windows XP Home Edition as
"The standard operating system". Even Microsoft doesn't have that
much chutzpah. ;-)

It's a well-known fact, documented by Microsoft, that XP Home Edition
doesn't have some of the networking capabilities, designed for large
corporate or institutional networks, that XP Pro has.
