I had problems doing it this way (printer ports method). Instead,
opened up the item under device manager (Properties/Port Setting
Tab/Advanced Button/COM Port Number Drop-down menu) and assigned the CO
port anyway...

Starting from COM1 and changing to COM2, etc. until all the port
changed from COMx(in use) to an unused state.

It seemed too easy, so after I cleared all of the ports and rebooted t
make sure it took effect. There must be a way do to clear them all a
once, but this was easy enough
