Default COM Surrogate bug

Talk to me about COM Surrogate?

My Home XP SP1 system was newly hooked up to cable for about 20 minutes
before I got the cable guy out the door and launched my Zone Alarm for the
first time. I know now I should have done that in reverse, so I'm thinking a
monster got in right in that open window.

In about a day or two, "COM Surrogate" is requesting permission to enter the
net. I click for more information and ZA takes me to a web page that
introduces me to this malicious sniper and tells me to please do my part by
disallowing it to make its way out of my computer and to the net where it
can do harm in great numbers. { sigh } Ok.

I listed this request at the ZoneLabs website users group when it first came
up and got a response to download a couple utilities to "turn off" two
things that might enable the beast, which I followed, but I'm not satisfied
that it's carcass is still lurking in my system and nothing I do seems to
find it or eradicate it. Surely it has hidden itself under a different
name??

Perhaps it's really gone and my steps are overkill, but when I remove the
program from my confine list in ZA, sure enough, he pops up again in just
another day and wants to create havoc on the net. To which I promptly reply,
"get the hell back in your cage!"

So far I've downloaded and scanned with:

FixQhost.exe, FixSbigC.exe, Fix SbigE.exe, FixSbigF.exe, FixSobigB.exe,
FixWelch.exe and Stinger.exe (and therefore did not run FixSober.exe,
FixSwen.exe, Fix Sobig.exe, FxDumaru.exe, FxMimail.exe since Stinger
included those in the signature file.)

The fix tools list at Symantec is L O N G but I'll go through it if I must
to find the right fix-it (just please tell me I don't have to?). Also ran:

NAV scan, SpyBot and AdAware. Nothing shows up as found, much less
quarantined or deleted.

So what I need is:

A sleeping pill to forget about Surrogate if necessary or ....

could you recommend a good system cleaner and/or reg cleaner that will
locate old dll files from programs past and get the junk off my drive, plus
will hunt down the little bastard and extricate him from my world.

I'm not averse to using regedit if I know where to go. I've taken a close
look at the registry. It's got folders in there from very early installs and
removals that linger. I just don't want to willy-nilly delete anything not
being sure.

Certainly have no clue where to start looking for Surrogate.

Other than that, my system is tip top based on other tips and tricks found
here. Thanks again for all your time and attention.
