Default computer is in use and has been locked

I get the "this computer is in use and has been locked" message. I do
not have the prompt for password when computer resumes from standby
checked off. I click the enter button and get back to my screen.
However, now I cannot access any program. I get an "application failed
to initialize properly (0x0000142) error message. The only way I can
get control of computer back is to reboot the computer. This problem
started happening out of the blue. My norton virus and parasite
programs do not find anything. Can anyone help me on this?

do you have prompt for password set for screensaver?
that would generate this behaviour, at least the computer being locked

I do not. However, I used to have it set for prompt for password and
the problem never happened. I only changed the prompt for password
setting since this problem started occuring. Therefore I believe the
problem has nothing to do with that option. Any other ideas?
Appreciate your help.
