computer won't turn on

Posted: 06-02-2004, 08:53 PM
A few nights ago, my computer froze up. Keystrokes, mouse,
and Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work, and neither did pressing the
button on the front of the machine. I am using Win XP
Home, and I bought my computer a few months ago and have
not had any problems before.

My Zone Alarm software said that it was waiting for a file
to close. I waited for many minutes and then turned off
the power at the surge protector. I turned the power back
on, and now the computer will not turn on at all. The
reset button has no effect, and neither does the on/off
switch at the back of the machine. The power is on, and
other devices plugged into the same socket work fine. What
could be wrong?

Your PSU expired. (Power supply unit) You can pick up a new on at almost
any PC store. Or if the PC is still under guarantee, it should be replaced
free of charge.

>I had this problem once in the dim and distant past, it
appeared that for some reason the motherboard went 'TIlT'
when i inadvertently knocked out the plug and cut off
power to the machine, took me a few hours to realise that
the PSU was the problem, unplug it from the mains for a
few minutes then plug it in again and try to boot up,
seems to be onboard surge protection that causes it.

If this does nothelp try a CMOS reset, again diconnect
from the main completly then open the case and carefully
remove the CMOS battery, leave for about 10 mins to run
down then put it back again and plug in to the mains and
try to boot, failing that I would look to the PSU as the
suspect, have it's output checked or try a spare unit.
Hope this helps.
