Connecting to network

Posted: 12-04-2006, 09:45 AM

Hi,

I've installed the MSDN download version of Vista Ultimate on a HP nw9440.
No errors when installed.

But I can't access internet or my SBS 2003 server...
I have Zyxel P-334WT wireless/router/switch connected to an Zyxel router
from my broadbanddel.

Vista doesnt get IP address. It happens it gets dns and gateway addresses
but no ip address, and it happens it gets ip address, but no dns and gateway
address...

I first installed Win XP on this machine, and everything worked fine. Then I
formatted the disk and installed Vista...:-(

Anyone have som ideas?

After having a very smooth install of upgrade to Vista from XP Home, I had
the same problem with Xytel router. After working with my DSL provider's
tech support by phone, we were unable to secure an internet connection in
order to reach Windows Update for patches and driver updates, suspecting the
problem to be driver incompatibility. Had no choice but to clean boot
reinstall XP Home and am currently awaiting word on new drivers before trying
again.

I had to use tha Zyxel as a plain switch and the DSL providers router for
DHCP - then it worked. Strange... I think Vista "couldn't talk" with the
Zyxel to get IP...strange...

It seems you have the reverse problem as everyone else (which should make
your problem easier I would think). Assuming your XP machine had been
running fine while connected directly to the cable modem it's most likely a
configuration issue. Since the Vista machine can't lock your XP machine from
the router, i'm thinking your connection issues are just standard XP network
issues. Some items that i would check are:

1. If you're running DHCP on your new router make sure your XP machine is
set to run DHCP. I'm assuming it should already be set to DHCP since most
cable internet providers run it. It may be necessary to release and renew
your IP address (start -> run -> type "cmd" (less the quotes), type "ipconfig
/release", then type "ipconfig /renew").

2. If you're running static IP addresses on your router double check that
they are on the same network... first three sets of numbers the same (and not
conflicting with the new Vista machine).

3. Make sure you aren't connecting your XP machine to the router with a
crossover cable.

4. Check to make sure your computers are on the same workgroup (not sure if
this is required for connection to a router but the default workgroup for
Vista and XP is different).

Just some thoughts i would try.
