Continuous rebooting problem

Posted: 06-30-2006, 02:14 AM
I installed Vista and went through all the updates. Then in the middle of
the night, about every two hours, I hear my 'windows theme' music come on.
For some reason, my computer keeps rebooting on it's own. Anyone else have
that problem or know what is causing it? I'm using the 64bit version of
Vista.

Dingy--

I don't know what's causing it but try running a chkdsk /R (case doesn't
matter I just wanted to make the switch easy to see. If Vista is on C:\ for
example you would type into the run box:

chkdsk C:\ r

with a space between the backslash and the "r" and you'll have the cmd
prompt pop up and ask if you want to run it on next boot and you will type
"Y">enter. Then close all applications, ect. and restart.

thanks Chad, I'll give that a try. BTW, I didn't think to check the Admin
event log earlier. This entry was shown before each reboot(there are several
suspect entries, but this one is identical)

"The SL UI Notification Service service was successfully sent a start
control."

That entry is followed by another one a few minutes later

"The previous system shutdown at 4:04:54 AM on 6/29/2006 was unexpected"

Dingy--

Although not directly related by title, I find doing the simple steps in
this article also help. Sometimes what seem to be random restarts are
admixed with failure to shut down during the random restarts:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...-Shutdown.html

Also go to devmgmt.msc >expand the plus at Universal Bus Serial
Controllers>right click each "universal root hub
entry">properties>power>take check out of box " "Allow this computer to turn
off this device to save power."
