Customizing Titles...

Is there a way to add titles to MovieMaker? I'd like to add my own
background...

titles automatically go over any background clip you have.... maybe you're
using titles on the video track... just drag the title from there to the
title overlay track and it'll be over your backgrounds.

zoom into the timeline as needed to more easily work with the clips...

Explain what you mean by background? This can be changed anyway... For the
title already added, just change to Timeline View (ctrl-T) and drag the
title into the Title Overlay track. Any video above the title will appear as
the background. Next time you want such a title choose:

Make titles or credits > Add titles "on" the selected clips on ...
