dead hard drive on iMac -- need expert advice!

Posted: 08-10-2004, 03:38 PM
Over a month ago, my iMac died. I couldn't restart it from any
software recovery disks because the software didn't recognize my hard
drive.

Then, last night, after it spent gathered dust on the shelf
(unplugged), I started it up and everthing seemed to work fine. I
quickly gathered some data that I needed from the machine and started
to burn it on to a disk. When I returned to check on the disk, I saw
the computer had died again.

This morning, I cannot get the thing to start up and software restore
disks don't recognize the hard drive.

Does anyone have any advice on how to recover this data?

Thanks!

So if I understand correctly, you can boot the machine from a CD, but after
doing so, you can't get to the HD because it is not being seen by the OS. If
this is the case, then you have two likely methods of recovering your data.
One, that the HD works long enough to get you data off of it. Two, that you
send the HD to a professional data recovery company and let them work their
magic.

three - try using Norto utilities or Diskwarrior and see if you can
recover it

Try Diskwarrior. I have an Imac Bondi that was dead (folder with
flashing question mark on startup). Diskwarrior brought it back to life.
Still running.
