Everytime I start up Windows XP and log in my default web
page is hijacked to searchdot.net Is there any way to
stop this annoyance without doing a complete re install?

Open Control Panel and choose Internet Options
The top box is your home page setting - type in http - wherever you want

If you cannot change it from that tap, you can edit the registery
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
the key name is StartPage- same thing, change it to the url you want to use
