deleting an unknown drive (virus related?!)

Posted: 11-04-2003, 10:05 AM
I have recently been swarmed with several viruses which
has caused some things to malfunction on my system (Win XP
Home) including (maybe, maybe not...?) the appearance of
an "F" drive which, under "Properties" states that it is
full...but there IS NO other drive! I tried to delete it
but it says that I don't have permission...contact Admin,
etc...but I AM THE OWNER/ADMIN! Anybody got any
suggestions as to how to rid of this thing?? In addition,
my computer crawwwwwwwwwwlllls along now...i mean at a
completely ridiculously slow speed. Any input is greatly
appreciated! Thanks, Scott.

Hi Scott,

Sounds as though you have unfinished cleaning to do. Start off with
checking your runkeys and running processes:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

You should be able to recognize the listings. If any look unfamiliar look
them up via Google. Once confirmed to be the culprit (worm/virus/spyware),
end the process via Task Manager, delete the runkey(s) and then do a search
to see if any of them are listed in either the root folder or System32.

If indeed your system has been cleaned of the virii you mentioned and the
above does not apply in your case:

Ad-Aware v5.83

Good luck!
